Excerpt from Lisa Mahar's introduction: "Inevitably, art that incorporates light brings up religious connotations. For centuries, light has symbolized a cosmic consciousness, a higher entity. Spiritual connections to light are found both in religious paintings, which often include light as a primary element, and stained glass windows that cast colored light into church spaces…. Even though Brugger and Schmid's work focuses on the light and its effect on its surroundings rather than the signs that provide the illumination, the color of the light reveals important historical and cultural differences."
